Story
Painkillers uncover the sources of the 21st century’s most pressing health epidemic. Strong narcotic painkillers, or opioids, were once used as drugs of last resort for pain sufferers. Purdue shifted OxyContin into a billion-dollar blockbuster by venturing into an exceptional marketing campaign and claiming that the drug’s long-acting formulation made it safer to use than conventional painkillers for many types of pain. This misconception was quickly shattered as drug users understood that crushing an Oxy could release its drug payload all at once. Even in its prescribed form, Oxy has proven fatally addictive. As the use and abuse of OxyContin increased, Purdue hid what it knew from regulators, doctors, and patients.
