Neelam Kothari was born in Hong Kong to a Gujarati Indian father Shishir Kothari and an Iranian mother Parveen Kothari. In 2000, she married Rishi Sethia, the son of a businessman from the UK. But the couple got divorced soon. In 2011, Neelam married her long-time boyfriend Samir Soni. After two years of marriage, the couple adopted a daughter named Ahana.

Controversy
- In the year 1998, during the filming of Hum Saath Saath Hain, Neelam along with her co-star Salman Khan, Saif Ali Khan, Sonali Bendre, and Tabu was charged with the Wildlife Act and the IPC for the poaching of two blackbucks in Kankani. Neelam was forgiven by the CJM court at Jodhpur on 5 April 2018.
