He started his career with the Bengali movie Chalachitro for which he won the best newcomer actor award.  Some of his best films are Kharij ( 1982), The Bengali Night ( 1988), Antareen ( 1993), Mr. and Mrs. Iyer ( 2002), Madly Bangalee ( 2009), Mahanagar @ Kolkata ( 2010), Ranjana Ami Ar Asbona ( 2011), Chitrangada: The Crowning Wish ( 2012), Dutta Vs Dutta ( 2021), Saheb Bibi Golaam ( 2015), Byomkesh O Chiriyakhana ( 2016), Byomkesh Gotro ( 2018), Ek Je Chhilo Raja ( 2018), etc. He also directed many films such as Dutta Vs Dutta, Madly Bangalee, The Bong Connection, Chalo Let’s Go, Ranjana Ami Ar Ashbona, and Byomkesh Bakshi films.

Besides acting, he is a leading singer and released many albums such as  Purono Guitar (1995), Chalo Bodlai (1998), Bandra Blues (2000), Rawng Pencil (2001), Ami ar Godot (2007), and Unoshaat (2014).

Controversy

Anjan Dutt came into the limelight when he replied to the trollers by writing on social media. He wrote:

“Sometimes it feels rather disgusting to see posts that still indulge in snide remarks, jokes and trolls on anything that is of some constructive value in these terribly dark times when our constitution is at stake. I have seriously never voiced any political opinion all these years because I am not qualified to. But, there have been many, since my boyhood, expressing their half-baked politics which has actually benefitted no one, nothing”.
