Rajesh Sharma had an interest in acting since his childhood.  He joined a theatre group when he was too young.  After that, Rajesh entered the Hindi film industry with the movie Maachis in 1996. Rajesh Sharma started acting in 1996 with the most popular film, Maachis by Gulzar, starring Chandrachur Singh, Om Puri, Tabu, Raj Zutshi, and Shergill.  The film bagged the National Film Award for Best Popular Film Providing Wholesome Entertainment. 

Rajesh Sharma returned to the Bollywood industry after 9 years in 2005 with Pradeep Sarkar’s movie Parineeta starring Saif Ali Khan,  Vidya Balan,  Raima Sen,  Sanjay Dutt, and Diya Mirza.  The following year, he was cast in Dibakar Banerjee’s comedy-drama movie Khosla Ka Ghosla alongside Boman Irani,  Anupam Kher, Vinay Pathak, Parvin Dabas,  and Ranvir Shorey.  

In 2010, he acted in Ishqiya, starring Naseeruddin Shah,  Vidya Balan, and Arshad Warsi.  The movie was shown at the 34th Cairo International Film Festival.  After achieving incredible success in Ishqiya,  the actor appeared in the thriller movie No One Killed Jessica in 2011, starring Vidya Balan and Rani Mukherjee.  His other Hindi movies of the year include Nitesh Tiwari and Vikas Bahl’s Chillar Party and Milan Lutharia’s The Dirty Picture.  Rajesh appeared in the movie Chaalis Chauraasi in 2012, co-starring Kay Kay Menon,  Naseeruddin Shah,  Atul Kulkarni,  and Ravi Kishan.  His other film of the year, Luv Shuv Tey Chicken Khurana, became a hit.

In 2001, he appeared in two Bengali movies, Dada Thakur and Pratibad.
